A Full Day, Japanese Style

Soccer, cooking, origami, a geography lesson, and an art class occupied us most of the day. After beginning in the home rooms of our students' host brothers and sisters, our Bright School children were on the go until dinner time. It was a full but very satisfying day, ending around 7pm, with an orientation session for those Mito students visiting Bright School in the fall.

Just outside of our Bright School Lounge is an artificial turf soccer field, which seems to draw our students out on a regular basis. Soccer is obviously the most popular sport here at the school, and a pick-up game is going on most hours of the day. One of the soccer coaches gave our kids a lesson, but many also participated in a game with one of the girl's soccer teams. As I said in my previous blog, I have no idea where they get all of their energy.

One of the highlights of the day was a cooking class held in a full cooking classroom with 6 fully-furnished cooking stations. After a lesson from the teacher, our students made miso soup and a rice dish with vegetables, eggs, and beef. It needed to be good because what they cooked was going to be our lunch, and I must admit they did a great job. I enjoyed my portion immensely. As you'll see in the pictures, they enjoyed themselves immensely as well.

Classes in origami and social studies followed. The Japanese children sang songs reciting the many states in Japan (just imagine our children singing a song about our 50 states). They also played a game involving the identification of various geographical and historical features, which stumped most of us foreigners. The origami class produced a menagerie of birds, rabbits, hats, and, if I'm not mistaken, a sumo wrestler. Yes, they've taken origami to a whole new level!

Tomorrow is our Tokyo trip. We leave from the Mito train station at 7am, arriving in Tokyo around 10. We'll visit the Skytree observations tower, where we will eat lunch on the 30th floor. We'll also see the Sensouji Temple, Nakamise, and Japan Miraikan (a future/science museum). We'll arrive back at Mito station around 6, ready for dinner and a restful evening.

As you'll see in the pictures, we're having fun.
